Introduction / History

The ancestors of the Ewe migrated from the Northeast of Africa, down to the Nile valley, through Abyssinia, Chad, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso before finally settling beyond the Niger bend in the countries of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. Today Ewes are located in Ghana, Togo, Benin, SW Nigeria, Southern Burkina Faso, southern Cote d Ivoire, USA, Canada and Italy.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Ewe are very industrious. They are mainly occupied in trade, commerce, agriculture, fishing and weaving. Ewe are also heavily into professional occupations in law, medicine, business and finance, etc.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ewe believe in the supreme God, whom they call Mawu, which means, The One who exceeds all else. The Ewe also call on lesser gods; their clan and family deities. Totemism is part of the culture. Each clan and family has an animal totem.
