Introduction / History

The Greeks have been in Cyprus since 1500 BC. Greece controlled Cyprus during the Byzantine Empire but lost it to the Turks during the Ottoman Empire in 1571. Cyprus gained independence from the Ottomans in 1820. Cyprus fell under British rule from 1878-1960. In 1974, following a Turkish invasion, Cyprus was divided between ethnic Turkish and Greek regions. The language of Greeks in Cyprus is Cypriot Greek.
