Introduction / History

Before the Colonial Era, the Igbos lived in federations of villages where they shared a common market and lived among extended families. The largest political unit was the village. Ironically, the Colonial Era gave them a greater identity as a separate ethnic group. In Nigeria, where they are especially prominent, Igbos attempted in the late 1960s to form a separate nation. It ended in disaster and civil war.

Their high literacy rate and their mastery of the English language have opened many doors for them. They live in English-speaking countries as well as Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Ghana and Gambia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Some Igbos are wage laborers or sellers of handcrafts. In West Africa, most cultivate corn, beans, pumpkins, cassava and taro. Men are responsible for growing yams and women grow the other crops. Most of their livestock is reserved for sacrifices. They collect and sell palm oil and palm kernels. Being a prominent people in West Africa, the Igbos have their own cuisine and art.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditionally, the Igbos believed in a god of creation named Chukwu or Chinekw and an earth goddess named Ala. They also believed in many other spirits and deities, along with ancestral spirits they look to for protection. They hope to find the will of these spirits and deities through divination and oracles.

Most Igbos are now Christian. Many are Evangelical. Others are secular. Whatever their belief, they usually blend it with their traditional beliefs.

What Are Their Needs?

The Igbos are a powerful group in West Africa. Some have migrated to the West. They have much potential to be Christ s ambassadors if they are willing.

Prayer Points

Pray for hundreds of Igbos to become Christ s ambassadors no matter where they live.
Pray for Igbos to evangelize and disciple many others throughout West Africa.
Pray for them to feel God s presence, blessings and burden as they worship him.
