Zubayr ibn al-Awwam was a commander in Mohammed's army 1200 years ago. He migrated from Mecca to Sudan to found the Kawahia people. They now make up 36 subgroups and have over 200 tribal chiefs. They are part of the same ethnic cluster as the Baggara, which accurately translated means "cowman."
Their culture and ways are a blend of Arabic and sub-Saharan African. Kawahia are African in many respects; however, they still retain aspects of their Arab culture, such as loyalty, hospitality and strict codes of honor. Sudanese Arabs also retain characteristics of Arab family and societal life such as the distinct roles of males and females. They highly value males; women have a subservient role. However, in Sudanese Arab culture, women enjoy more freedom and liberty than women in many Arab societies around the world.
Some Kawahia live in transitory dwellings as they follow the grass for their cattle. It is hard to find adequate grasslands for cattle. Others live as farmers who grow beans, wheat, sorghum, cotton and fruit. They also have farm animals for consumption.
The Kawahia are almost entirely Sunni Muslim. They practice some of the ways of Islam: ritualized prayer five times a day, fasting during Ramadan, etc. Few have the means to go on pilgrimage to Mecca.
Many also practice traditional religion; they depend on the spirits for their daily needs.
There is a great need for loving workers to live and work among these Muslims. Concentrated prayer and evangelism efforts are necessary in order to reach their hearts for Jesus Christ.
Pray for Holy Spirit sent workers to go to the Kawahia people in Sudan.
Pray they would have access to scripture, both in printed and in recorded form.
Pray for them to have easy access to the JESUS Film and Christian radio broadcasts.
Pray for the message of Jesus to come to the Kawahia in a way that connects with their cultural values of loyalty and honor.
