Introduction / History

There are many small tribal communities in the Philippines, however each is defined distinctly by their language. For example, the Lubuagan Kalinga, one of the subgroups of the greater Kalinga people, have their own distinct language that shares their name.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Almost all tribal groups in the Philippines engage in farming. The main crops they cultivate are wet rice and maize. Secondary crops consist of vegetables, tobacco and coffee. On their farms, they also raise domestic animals such as dogs, goats and chickens. They have their own traditional dances and music. Most Lubuagan villages have a headman or chief who acts as a judge over disputes.

Most Lubuagan villages are organized in clusters around individual gardens. The fundamental social unit among these tribes is the extended family. Marriages are generally arranged while the prospective bride and groom are still quite young. Due to strict rules surrounding sexual relations between relatives, most marriages are "exogamous," meaning they take place with members from another community tribe. Depending on the influence of outside cultures, the clothing of each tribes varies. Some wear simple fabrics, while others dress in modern styles of clothing.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most members of the Lubuagan Kalinga tribe adhere to a traditional spiritual religion, following Mulu, a tribal deity. However, a minority are Christian believers despite struggling to keep their beliefs alive.

What Are Their Needs?

Although these people live in remote areas that are gradually being introduced to outside influences. They are in desperate need of quality medical care, modern farming techniques and educational opportunities that can give them a better future.
