Introduction / History

The Sinhalese are the largest people group in Sri Lanka.
Most Sinhalese in Canada live in Toronto in Ontario. Many live in Quebec and some in other parts of the country. The Sinhalese began coming to Canada in the 1950s. In the latter part of the 1980s more Sinhalese came to Canada as refugees, largely because of the war in Sri Lanka.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Sinhalese in Canada are involved in many activities that their community societies organize. There are many of these societies among the Sinhalese. The Sinhalese in Canada keep their people connected through the media. There are television and radio programs in the Sinhalese language. Also, there are two free Sinhalese newspapers. They speak English as well as Sinhalese.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most of them are Theravada Buddhists. Sinhalese Buddhist temples have religious and cultural events. Buddhist temples are used to encourage the Buddhist way of life among the Sinhalese.
