Introduction / History

The traditional occupation of the Kanda people was to provide flowers for the royal palace.

Where Are they Located?

The Kanda people live in India's northeastern state of Tripura.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kanda are usually day laborers, but many of them work all kinds of other jobs. Given their location in northeastern India, it's not a surprise that some work in tea estates.

When a Kanda couple gets married, they live with or near the husband's parents. They have both nuclear and extended families. They don't get married until they are adults, and their marriages are monogamous.

What Are Their Beliefs?

These people are entirely Hindu. They worship Maimurubbi and Laxmi as family deities, the latter being the goddess of wealth. Every Thursday they worship Trinath.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kanda people need more education so they can have more economic opportunities and a higher literacy rate.

Prayer Points

Pray for believers with a good educational background to go to the Kanda people and help them with their educational needs.
There are strong Christ-ward movements among peoples in nearby states. Pray that some of these believers will go to the Kanda people with the gospel.
Because these people speak Bengali, there are many Christian resources available that they can understand. Pray for these materials to reach every Kanda community.
