Introduction / History

The Sangisari are a small semi-nomadic pastoral mountain people of Iran. Their language, Sangisari, is similar to Farsi. Their homeland is in Iran’s Semnan and Tehran provinces.

What Are Their Lives Like?

These nomads travel 1500 kilometers each year, during the spring and summer. They live in black tents that are designed to keep out the heat. Each tent has a kitchen and a separate section for living space.

A breed of sheep is named after them. This kind of sheep has a much higher percentage of meat than other breeds. The meat of these sheep is among the most delicious and tender of any in the region. They also eat a kind of “chocolate” which they serve to guests.

The Sangisari are known to be master weavers who make beautiful carpets.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They practice a variety of folk Islam, rooted in their ancient beliefs. They believe the basics of Shia Islam, but in their daily lives they look to the spirit world for help.

What Are Their Needs?

There are three major ministry obstacles. Iran is a closed country. Their geographic isolationism and nomadism make them hard to reach. We know so little about them that those who approach them will have to start at the beginning.

Prayer Points

Pray for radio broadcasts in their language.
Pray for the Lord to give dreams of the risen and victorious Christ to Sangisari family leaders.
Pray for the Lord to give them an abundant harvest as a testimony of his power and goodness.
