Introduction / History

The Yanacona are also called Mitamae. They live in Colombia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Yanacona housing is modest. Most are small, with dirt floors and interwoven cane walls. Roofs are gabled. They are square-shaped with separate rooms and a kitchen.

Because they live in different climates, they grow different crops. Those in temperate climates grow cassava, bananas, sugar cane and coffee for commercial sale. Those in cold climates grow potatoes, wheat, squash and fruit orchards. Some work outside the reservation as day laborers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Yanaconas believe that the cosmos is divided into three parts. The world below is where the "tapucos" live. The intermediate world is where people, plants and animals live. The world above is the realm of God and the saints. They believe in virgins who are founders of particular peoples. One can see the Roman Catholic influence; about three-fourths are Catholic. There are also Evangelicals.

What Are Their Needs?

The Yanoconas need to put Jesus Christ first in their spiritual lives.

Prayer Points

Pray for revival to come to Yanacona churches, drawing them to the only savior.
Pray for Yanacona disciples who will make more disciples.
Pray for them to have so much spiritual hunger that they will forsake all other gods.
