Introduction / History

The Thanga traditionally were washers of silver but now they work mainly in agriculture.

They live in Manipur and speak, read and write in Meitei.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The women are good at weaving. The Thanga have many clans. Their families practice the custom of providing a bride price. They allow for divorce and remarriage. Like most Hindu communities they cremate their dead. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property. They are not vegetarians and eat rice as a staple food.

There is a village council to look after them. Government development programs have benefited them. Bihu is the most important festival for them.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Thanga practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

Almost all Hindus participate in yearly celebrations like Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama's birthday.

What Are Their Needs?

The Thanga Meitei people need a John 10:10 blessing: The abundant life Jesus offers those who are willing to submit to his lordship.

Prayer Points

Pray that Indian Christians will lead Thanga families to worship the King of kings.
Pray that the council leaders come to salvation and lead others to Jesus Christ.
Pray for the Lord to use dreams and visions along with the JESUS Film to draw Thanga people to the Lord.
