Introduction / History

There are many small tribal communities in the Philippines. Language is the chief distinguishing feature within Filipino tribal cultures. For example, the Sarangani Blaan have their own distinct language. Blaan is one of the subgroups of the greater Sarangani people. Their name means, “people of the mountains.” They live in Mindanao, a large island in the southern Philippines.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Almost all tribal groups in the Philippines are engaged in farming. The main crops they cultivate are wet rice and maize. Secondary crops consist of vegetables, tobacco and coffee. On their farms, they also raise domestic animals such as dogs, goats and chickens. The Sarangani Blaan are especially skilled at weaving. They have their own traditional dances and music, which attract tourists to their villages. Most Sarangani Blaan villages have a "headman" or chief who acts as a judge over disputes.

Most Sarangani Blaan villages are organized in clusters around individual gardens. The fundamental social unit among these tribes is the extended family. Marriages are generally arranged while the prospective bride and groom are still quite young. Due to strict taboos surrounding sexual relations between relatives, most marriages are "exogamous," meaning they take place with members from another community tribe. Depending on the influence of outside cultures, the clothing of the tribes varies. Some wear simple loincloths, while others dress in modern styles clothing.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most members of the Sarangani Blaan tribe are officially Christian. They can be either Roman Catholic or Evangelical. Like most tribal peoples, they struggle to keep their faith in Jesus Christ rather than a network of ancient spirits and Melu, their supreme being.

What Are Their Needs?

Although these remote tribes are slowly being forced into a modern world, they continue to struggle with life's most basic essentials. They are in desperate need of quality medical care, modern farming techniques and educational opportunities that can give them a better future.
