Introduction / History

The Guanacas are an indigenous tribe in Colombia. They are less than 1,000 in number and have lost their language. They now speak Spanish.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Guanaca family is patriarchal; each family is controlled by the father. They have an agricultural economy based on livestock, and especially farming. They grow onions, potatoes, sugar cane, beans and coffee. Some earn their money as day laborers or working on other people s farms.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Guanaca s traditional beliefs emphasized a group of deities. Today, they still adhere to traditional religion. There is also a Roman Catholic minority. There is a sizable group of Evangelicals among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Guanacas need protection. They will need to learn new job skills as we move further into the 21st century.

Pray for loving Christians to give the Guanacas job training so they will be prepared for an uncertain future.
