Introduction / History

Gazi [Gezi] is the language of the city of Gaz-e Borkhar near Isfahan in central Iran. “The people of Gaz have a language called Gezi, which is currently on the verge of extinction,” according to Iran Cities. The city has a long history going back before the time of Muslim domination, but Gaz has

never been an important city. For lack of a better name, the people of the city and general region are called Gazi.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Because the climate is semi desert, Gazi farmers dig wells and built canals. Wheat, cotton and pistachios are still grown. However, droughts and poor canal maintenance have forced many to move to the city. In the city people work in construction, manufacturing, services and handicrafts. Examples of jobs are stone cutting, brick making and carpet weaving.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The city had a fire temple, which was converted into a mosque after the Arabs conquest.

The Gazi people are now Shia Muslims.

What Are Their Needs?

The people could use help with arid agricultural development. Developing the handicraft industry would benefit the community.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to draw the Gazi people to Jesus.
Pray for Christian radio and TV broadcasts. Pray that people will listen and respond.
Pray that tent makers with agricultural and entrepreneurial skills will go to Gaz and reach
people.
