According to oral history, the Mbonga are a clan as well as a language, spoken by the Mbongas. They started with their ancestor, Mbonge, who was on a trek looking for fertile soil. He settled in Liene with the Balondos. He married one of their women and started a family. They eventually expanded into 44 villages.
The Mbongas are usually farmers who grow cocoa, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes and plantains. That which they don t eat, they sell. Those who live near water also fish. Some produce pottery and metal goods for sale.
They love their vibrant festivals where they display their culture through dancing and music. They also have their ceremonies and rituals during festivals. They preserve their culture through community groups and cultural associations. Like most people in this region, they give honor to their elders and value hospitality.
These values are being challenged as Mbongas move to the cities. Those who remain in rural areas are having their livelihoods threatened by deforestation and land disputes.
The Mbongas are more than half Christian, but few of them are Evangelical. Bible translation is in process. The other half are involved with traditional religion, putting their hope in the spirit world.
The Mbongas need a complete Bible and audio materials like the JESUS Film and gospel recordings.
Pray for accuracy in the Bible translation process.
Pray for God s word to draw the Mbongas into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.
Pray that soon Mbonga disciples will be making more disciples.
Pray for a record high harvest this year as a testimony of God s goodness and power.
