Introduction / History

Palenqueros in Colombia are the descendants of Africans who fled slavery in the late 1500s and 1600s. They escaped after being forced to work in mines and plantations. They found places where they could become self-sufficient and protected from the Spanish. These settlements were called palenques. Drums were used to alert one another of incoming Spanish soldiers.

The Palenqueros preserved their culture, and in time, they developed the hybrid Palenquero language. Their culture is diminishing because of globalization and forced displacement.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today the Palenqueros hold festivals to preserve their culture. They are trying to educate their children to appreciate their music. Drums, which they once used to alert one another to enemy soldiers, are now part of their identity. Food is another part of their culture. They love their own cuisine, such as a coconut-rice dish.

Some make their living through eco-tourism or selling handicrafts to tourists.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all Palenqueros are Christian, usually Roman Catholic. They also have an Evangelical presence.

What Are Their Needs?

The Palenqueros need to go as Christ s ambassadors to those who lack an adequate gospel presence.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to raise up and thrust out Palenquero evangelists and disciples.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to draw the Palenqueros to Jesus Christ and depend on him alone.
Pray for them to put the words of the Bible to music.
