Introduction / History

The Sorbs are a Slavic speaking people who live primarily in Saxony and Brandenburg, regions in eastern Germany near the Polish border. Others are in Austria. There is also a small Sorb diaspora in the United States. They have two subgroups with separate languages. There are the Milceni (upper) and Lusatian (Lower) Sorb.

Historically they were first mentioned in the 800s.

There was a major effort to “Germanize” them in Germany, especially between 1875-1945. After WWII, Saxony was part of communist east Germany. They clashed with East German police over the communist insistence on restricting religious observations and collective farming.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lower Lusatian language is spoken only by the elderly. The younger generations speak German.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most of the Lower Sorbs are either Roman Catholic or Lutheran. Like most other European peoples, there is a strong inclination towards secularism at the heart level.

What Are Their Needs?

Like most peoples in Europe, the Lusatian Sorbs need to center their spirituality on Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Pray for Lusatian Sorb disciples to make more disciples.

Pray for their spirituality to be centered on Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Pray for spiritual hunger to be satisfied by a deep relationship with the only savior.
