Introduction / History

The Broq-Pa of Bhutan speak a language called Brokkat. The Broq-Pa live in the Merak Sakten region of Bhutan. Most live in India, although there are also some in Pakistan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Broq-Pa are partly nomads and live in a difficult climate. This could be an obstacle to the gospel. They raise yaks and sheep and sell dairy produce for a living. The wealthy have many yaks. The Broq-Pa go to some villages swapping their products for food. They are connected to certain families in these villages for this purpose. Some Broq-Pa are poor and work as carpenters, blacksmiths and tailors for example.
Men and women are treated the same and women often play the leading role in such things as marriages for their children.
Polygamy is acceptable to the Broq-Pa and steps take place before a couple are married. The parents of the bridegroom discuss matters with an astrologer before marriage takes place. Astrologers advise on death matters also.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The religion of the Broq-Pa is Gelugpa Buddhism and Ama Jhomo is a main deity. They pray to their gods for protection. They have festivals.

What Are Their Needs?

The Broq-Pa people need the chance to allow the grace of Christ into their villages and families.
