The Velan (or Velar) are a Scheduled Caste who live mainly in Kerala though some are further east in Tamil Nadu. They speak, read and write in Malayalam.

They are traditionally washers of clothes and coconut harvesters. They also work in livestock production, in businesses, in industry, and in government work. Those that live in the north continue with their tradition of making pots. Some are landowners. The women help in agriculture, social and religious matters. Women also look after finances. Marriages include a dowry. The Velan have cross-cousin marriages. Sons inherit the property on the death of the father with the oldest son taking charge of the home. The Velans do not allow for divorce and remarriage. They have a group of elders to judge disagreements. They are generally well-educated and they educate both boys and girls. The Velans are not vegetarians who eat beef and pork, which is unusual for Hindus.

The Velan are Hindus by religion and have their own festivals.

The Velan people need the guidance of God the Father so they can experience life to the full.
