Introduction / History

The Matapis live in the fragile ecological zone of a tropical rain forest with many valleys and hills. It rains almost every day. The soil can be sandy or clay.

They first met the Spaniards when Spanish ships came to the mouth of the river. Their lives were changed when the rubber industry took over their homeland in the early 20th century. They also suffered during the war between the Colombians and the Peruvians in the early 1930s.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Matapis food sources come from fishing, hunting, food gathering and growing cassava and other crops. They use slash-and-burn farming techniques.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most stay with their traditional religion, but the Matapis also have a Christian presence, mostly from the Roman Catholics. There are also Evangelicals among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Matapis need a spiritual reawakening that will draw them to the cross.
