Introduction / History

The Delen people, a small ethnic group in Sudan, have navigated a complex history marked by migration, conflict and adaptation. Originally from the central regions, the Delen migrated to southern Sudan centuries ago, seeking fertile land and security from regional conflicts. Over time, they have maintained a distinct identity, preserving their language and traditions despite external pressures from neighboring groups and the broader sociopolitical changes in Sudan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for the Delen people is primarily centered around agriculture and pastoralism. The community relies on subsistence farming, cultivating crops like sorghum, millet and maize. Livestock, including cattle and goats, play a crucial role in their economy and social structure. The Delen live in small, tightly-knit villages, where extended families share responsibilities and resources.

The environment in southern Sudan presents challenges, such as seasonal flooding and droughts, which can threaten their food security. Despite these hardships, the Delen have developed resilience through traditional knowledge and communal cooperation.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Delen people practice a blend of traditional animist beliefs and Christianity, influenced by missionary activity in the 20th century. Their traditional beliefs include reverence for ancestors, spirits and natural forces, which they believe govern the land and its fertility. Christian practices are often intertwined with these indigenous beliefs, leading to a syncretic faith.

Religious leaders, both traditional and Christian, hold significant influence within the community, mediating conflicts, leading ceremonies and offering guidance. The Delen's religious practices are deeply connected to their identity and are expressed through music, dance and oral traditions.

What Are Their Needs?

The Delen people face several critical needs stemming from economic, health and educational challenges. Access to clean water and healthcare remains limited, leading to preventable diseases and high child mortality rates. Education is another pressing concern, with many children unable to attend school due to the lack of facilities and teachers.

Additionally, the Delen community needs support in enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience to environmental changes. Initiatives aimed at improving irrigation, introducing drought-resistant crops, and providing veterinary services for livestock would significantly improve their quality of life.

Prayer Points

Pray the hearts of the Delen people would be stirred to hunger after God, to drink of living water.
Pray for family-based movements to Christ to soon transform Delen society, blessing them spiritually and economically.
Pray for the Lord to move in the hearts of believers to give up their own rights and sacrifice their lives to see the Delen people blessed by the work of Jesus Christ, the only savior.
