The origin of the Efik people is unknown, though there are a number of stories about them. Some say they came from one of the tribes of Israel and made their way from Ethiopia to West Africa. Today they live in Nigeria and Cameroon, though a small number are in the United States.
In the past, the Efik people had a long fattening room ceremony for women about to be married. The women would be secluded with older women who would massage them, give them six huge meals, have them sleep a lot and teach them how to have a happy marriage. They still prefer their women to be hefty.
The Efiks are well known today for their dancing. The women dress up with beautiful, colorful clothes, paint their faces, and dance for the public. Efik women are known for their artwork, involving beadwork, basketweaving and producing colorful fabrics.
They have masquerades, usually involving all men. The masks represent the return of ancestral spirits.
Their diet consists of various soups as well as the usual foods one would expect in West Africa.
The Efiks are highly Christianized, especially in Cameroon where there is a high percentage of Evangelicals. Traditional religion still holds part of them.
They have a complete Bible, the JESUS Film, and many other Christian resources. All they need is the willingness to disciple those without Christ.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move the Efik people to disciple others throughout West Africa.
Pray for them to put Jesus first and never look back.
Pray for them to have all their spiritual and physical needs met according to God s abundant goodness.
