Historically, the Soninke have always been traders and travelers in Africa. With the increasing difficulty of farming resulting from the desertification of the land and since French colonialization, the Soninke have turned increasingly to travel and work outside of the area. Consequently, they have maintained an above average standard of living and are known to be relatively rich. The Soninke who have migrated to France, however, are virtually invisible. The French government doesn't track statistics based on religion, ethnic origin, or race. Many Soninke believe, "If you're not counted, you don't count."
The vast majority of the Soninke people live in West Africa, but a small number have migrated to France and other Western nations.
In France, the Soninke and other West African peoples face a high incidence of unemployment. Though they were among the wealthier peoples in West Africa, they often have to settle for menial jobs in France. Racism and discrimination are serious issues. African migrants who have migrated to France are often blamed for the country's economic woes.
Like most of the people groups of West Africa, the Soninke are long-standing followers of Islam, though their beliefs are tainted by African folk religion. There are only a few known believers in Christ among them.
In addition to their calls for social and economic justice, the Soninke need adequate health care and educational assistance. They face an uphill battle in France to establish themselves and socially advance. They need higher education so they can function well in France's industrial economy.
Pray for the Lord to move powerfully to bless the Soninke people who have migrated to France. Ask Him to soften their hearts and turn to Him to meet their spiritual and economic needs. Pray for mission groups in France to find persons of peace and to come alongside them so that they can foster a movement to Christ among Muslim Africans in France.
